The city of Kent will close the Lake Meridian Park floating fishing dock and the boat launch from May 6 through June 16 for the removal and replacement of the fishing dock.

Work crews will use the boat launch during construction to remove the existing dock and launch new dock segments, according to city parks staff.

The City Council awarded the contract in January to Anacortes-based Neptune Marine Services to replace the dock. The company submitted a low bid of $750,985. Sales tax will boost the contract to $822,328.

The bids were lower than the city-contracted estimate of $1.5 million because of a very conservative estimate, a very good bid climate and a low bidder who had recently completed a similar job and had a good grasp of the costs, according to city documents.

The state Recreation and Conservation Office awarded a grant of $1 million to the city last year to help pay for the dock replacement. City parks staff is looking at options for how to spend the remaining grant money.

Crews will demolish and remove the existing floating dock as well as fabricate and install a new dock. Several floats on the dock are listing and some of the pilings anchoring the floats are loose, according to parks staff. Crews will place the new dock in the same spot as the existing dock.

The new dock will be for swimming, fishing, non-motorized boating access and walking. King County built the dock in 1985 before the city annexed the Lake Meridian area.
