A heated and emotional exchange Friday night sent Kent-Meridian into an overtime battle against Kentwood.

Despite Kent-Meridian’s strong showing, a missed extra point kick separated the South Puget Sound League North 4A teams, with the Royals falling 28-27 at French Field.

Brandon Systma scored on a 3-yard run in overtime and Min Park converted for the Conquerors (4-0 league) to secure the hard-fought win.

Robert Nelson III’s 3-yard TD run gave the Royals (1-3) a short-lived 27-21 lead, but K-M missed its second extra point kick of the game.

The Royals gave Kentwood fits with dual-threat quarterback Quincy Carter and Nelson III, who scored four short-yardage TDs on the night. On several occasions, Carter outmaneuvered and outran defenders on key downs. Nelson III consistently moved the ball.

Systma scored three TDs and Brian Campbell hit Devaugn Wells on a 7-yard scoring pass for Kentwood.

Despite the stinging loss, K-M coach Brett Allen praised his team’s effort.

Kentwood takes on Kentridge at 7 p.m. next Friday at French Field. K-M hosts Spanaway Lake next Saturday at 7 p.m. at French Field.
