Combustibles left too close to a stove top started a house fire Tuesday night in the 14300 block of Southeast 256th Place in Kent.

Firefighters were dispatched at 7:35 p.m. to a possible kitchen fire with smoke coming from the back of the two-story home, according to a Puget Sound Regional Fire Authority media release. Once they determined the lone occupant had gotten out safely, firefighters from Mountain View and Maple Valley assisted Kent-based Puget Sound Fire to aggressively attack the fire to limit the damage.

The fire spread throughout the first floor and caused significant smoke and heat damage to the second story as well.

A woman escaped the fire before emergency responders arrived and is being housed by family members.

King County Medic One and the Zone 3 Fire Explorers also responded to the incident.

Investigators determined combustibles left too close to a stove top ignited the fire, which is considered accidental.
