Kent Police arrested a woman for investigation of fourth-degree assault after she reportedly punched her boyfriend during a dispute at Denny’s restaurant, 1246 Central Ave. N.

Officers responded to a 911 call about a fight at about 2:10 a.m. on New Year’s Day at the restaurant, according to the police report. When officers arrived, an employee said the couple had fought in the parking lot and then left.

But as officers were inside Denny’s, a woman told an officer she needed to talk to him. Officers noted the woman appeared to be intoxicated and had slurred speech. The woman then lunged toward her boyfriend inside the restaurant.

Police took the woman outside and twice she tried to get back inside to fight her boyfriend, so officers handcuffed her as she yelled profanities at them.

The boyfriend told police he had dated the woman for about 18 months. He said he didn’t want to press charges against her. Officers reviewed video surveillance from the restaurant and saw the woman had punched her boyfriend.

An officer read the woman her Miranda rights and asked her if she understood her rights.

“Absolutely not,” she said.

Police didn’t speak to her further.

Man walks on roof

Officers arrested a man for investigation of malicious mischief, criminal trespass and obstructing an officer after a man called 911 to report someone walking on the roof of a building at about 5:43 p.m. on Jan. 1 at the southeast corner of 72nd Avenue South and South 182nd Street.

Officers saw a man who matched the description walking in the parking lot near the building. The man kicked a vehicle parked in the lot, according to the police report.

An officer in a patrol vehicle followed the man and told him to stop but the man refused the commands. The officer exited his vehicle and the man started to walk toward him, so the officer used a kick move to knock the man to the ground, where two officers handcuffed him.

Police recognized the man from multiple previous contacts. Officers discovered the address numbers on the building had been damaged when the man climbed down from the roof. Broken pieces of the numbers were on the ground. Owners of the building estimated the damage at $1,500.

The man had slurred speech and smelled of alcohol, according to the report. Police found on the roof a backpack, a beanie and a bottle of whiskey that belonged to the man. The man had previous convictions for malicious mischief, criminal trespassing, making false statements and other crimes.

Hotel employees called 911 to report a man who demanded a key to a room even though he was not a guest, according to the police report.

Officers found the man walking on the property. Police had banned him earlier in the day from the hotel after a similar complaint of the man trying to stay on the property.

Police searched the man and discovered he had crystal meth in a bag in his jacket pocket. The man said he had been smoking meth for several months. He told officers he wanted a room at the hotel because he was homeless and had nowhere else to go.

The man said he was walking out of the club when other members confronted him and one man reportedly pushed him down outside the gym and the other men jumped on top of him, according to the police report. The man had a scraped knee but no other injuries. He said he wanted police to contact the other man to let him know the case had been documented.

When officers contacted the other man, he told them the man had talked “stuff” to his wife and then to him when asked about why he was talking like that to his wife. He said he left with his friends when the man pushed him and they started to fight. A club manager helped break up the fight.

Both men told police they would stay away from each other. No arrests were made.
