Is it time to get someone on the City Council the likes of Kshama Sawant with a Socialist Alternative perspective?

The recent unanimous votes and the near total absence of any critical discussion at the most recent council meeting – the sound of crickets comes to mind – may be a good indicator that we need to have at least one someone who will show the courage and conviction to represent the interests of the people of Kent and not sell out to moneyed interests.

For those that may not be aware, the Socialist Alternative is a national organization fighting in the workplace, community and on campus against the exploitation and injustices people face every day.

It fights against budget cuts in public services, actively campaigns for a $15-an-hour minimum wage. They are made up of people of all colors speaking out against racism and attacks on immigrants, students organizing against tuition hikes and war, women and men fighting sexism and homophobia.

This sounds like just the medicine we all need in the face of the next four-year onslaught of Trumpism that Kent citizens will face, sadly, all too familiarly reflected in the votes caste by the present City Council.

Is there another Kshama Sawant-type activist who can bring passion for social justice to work as a public servant for the presently unrepresented majority of people in Kent? As the last election proved, we cannot rely on either major party to represent interests other than the elitist top 10 percent.
