Families and children braved the chill and rain to greet Santa Claus and celebrate a Kent tradition – Winterfest – at the Town Square Plaza on Saturday.

The Kent Lions and its foundation presented the holiday tradition. The free celebration – A Christmas Gift from the Kent Lions to the Community of Kent – included outdoor family activities on Second Avenue between Meeker and Smith streets; Santa’s House; caroling; and a refreshment tent that served hot cider and popcorn provided by the Kent Lions and hot chocolate from Kent Lutheran Church.

The Kent Library and its children’s librarian presented a holiday reading in the afternoon.

Santa arrived to the town square, hitching a ride with the Kent Regional Fire Authority on one of its trusty fire engine trucks. He talked to children and led the crowd to the lighting of the Christmas tree in a program that was synchronized to music.

The Kent Station Santa House will be open and remain open for the remainder of the season.

Media sponsors included Warm 106.9, MOViN 92.5, Rock 98.9 and AM 880 KIXI will provide activities and giveaways to guests.

Winterfest is presented with the help the city of Kent, Kent Station, Kent Downtown Partnership and the Kent Library.
