Obstruction

Kent Police arrested a 25-year-old man for obstructing an officer after the man led police on a short foot chase at about 6 p.m. Aug. 18 through an East Hill parking lot and department store in the 10200 block of Southeast 240th Street.

Police responded to the store because of a reported domestic dispute in the parking lot between the man and a woman.

The man began running through the parking lot as officers arrived and parked their patrol vehicle near him, according to reports.

The foot chase began when the man refused to stop after being ordered to do so. The chase, between the man and an officer, went up and down an escalator inside the store before the man exited the store and ran across the parking lot toward a residential neighborhood.

The man then climbed a fence between the parking lot and neighborhood, but fell into blackberry bushes on the other side of the fence. Officers then were able to him.

Drugs

Bicycle patrol officers arrested a man for investigation of possessing marijuana shortly after 9 p.m. Aug. 18, after they reportedly smelled the substance while riding through a Sound Transit parking garage on West Smith Street.

The officers spotted a woman in the driver’s seat of a car and a man standing next to the car, smoking what appeared to be a rolled marijuana joint, according to the police report. The man then reportedly threw the joint over the garage wall as the officers arrived at the car. Police found the item on the ground near the garage.

The man told officers he got scared and threw away what he had been smoking. When asked by officers if there was marijuana in the car, the man replied, “We smoked it all except for what I dropped.”

Police did not find any drugs during a search of the car. The officers did not arrest the woman in the car and released her at the scene. Officers transported the man to the city jail.

Theft

A store employee called police after seeing a man take numerous items from a pharmacy Aug. 18 in the 26200 block of Pacific Highway South.

Police arrested the man for investigation of third-degree theft after he reportedly took 16 items from the store.

The man had placed the items in a backpack and a security alarm sounded when he exited the store, according to the police report.

Officers saw the man walking in the parking lot and stopped him.

He initially denied taking anything, but then said he needed the items because he was going into treatment soon. The man did not specify what type of treatment or what he meant by his statement.

A store employee reportedly saw the man toss a backpack into a garbage can outside the store.

The employee recovered the backpack and found the 16 items from the store. The items were worth about $177.

Prostitution

During the investigation of a prostitution case last week, an officer recognized the name of another woman in the report with a history of prostitution activity in the Kent area. The woman allegedly had a room at a hotel in the 25100 block of Pacific Highway South.

Officers went to the hotel at about 6 p.m. Aug. 18 and arrested the woman for investigation of a violation of a Kent order to stay out of areas of prostitution, according to the police report.

Three officers knocked on the door of the hotel. After the woman answered the door, she started to become combative with the officers until the officers handcuffed her. The woman told police she knew she had an order against her to stay out of areas of prostitution in Auburn. The woman said she didn’t know about a similar order for Kent.

Officers discovered the hotel room of the woman had been co-rented by a 46-year-old man, but had no other information about him.
