The Riverbend Golf Complex in Kent has a new restaurant with the opening this month of The Scotch and Vine.

Remodeling took longer than expected, but golfers and others can now eat lunch or dinner or grab a drink or two at the restaurant, 2019 W. Meeker St. Hours are 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily. Golfers can also grab breakfast items at food carts along the course.

One recent customer came away impressed.

“Wow what a great place,” Bradley Hawthorne posted on The Scotch and Vine Facebook page. “The remodel is fresh and modern with sweeping views of the course, the menu new and refreshing. Kent has needed a place like this forever. Welcome Scotch and Vine, I look forward to spending a lot of time getting to know your menu.”

Another customer enjoyed the setting and food.

“Love this place,” posted John Olano. “Great food. Fun atmosphere in a casual pub-like environment.”

The restaurant features steaks, chops, pastas, chicken and specialties. Beverages include Scotch labels, selections of bourbon, rye, Canadian and Irish whiskeys, wine and craft beer.

The Scotch and Vine opened in 2011 in downtown Des Moines. Owners David and Jill Pritchard added the Kent location at the city-owned Riverbend Golf Complex that includes an 18-hole course and a par 3 course.

City officials initially expected the restaurant to open in May.

“My understanding is the most recent delays were attributed to construction delays from longer than anticipated lead times for materials (such as kitchen equipment),” said Garin Lee, city interim co-parks director, in a July 27 email. “There have also been delays with the remodeling of the restrooms to meet ADA standards in the existing footprint.”

Lee said some of the less predictable issues were things discovered as floors were removed and refinished for the new layout. These included some wiring issues and re-configuring that was not planned. Some of last finished work still needed final inspections in order for the restaurant to open.

The lease requires payment by Scotch and Vine to the city of 8 percent of gross monthly revenues, with a minimum of $5,000 per month and a maximum of $12,000. The first three months of the lease are free to help the restaurant get up and running, according to city officials.

The city made design changes to the space to help attract customers. The entrance has been moved to allow people to easily enter the restaurant rather than coming in off to the side of it. Walls were removed to create banquet space.

A temporary banner marks the opening of the restaurant. Signage is expected to be added to a post along the street.
