The Kent City Council’s Operations Committee will consider a resolution to approve a grandfather clause to allow the Great American Casino to remain in business after July 1 when the city annexes the casino and the rest of the Panther Lake area.

The Operations Committee will consider the resolution when it meets at 4 p.m. March 16 at Kent City Hall, 220 Fourth Ave. S.

Kent currently bans casinos. But city officials can allow the Great American Casino, 20500 108th Ave. S.E., to continue to operate without having to allow other casinos in the city under a bill approved last year by the state Legislature for cities that annex casinos.

The committee, which includes Council members Les Thomas, Debbie Raplee and Jamie Perry, can decide whether or not to approve a grandfather clause to allow the casino to stay open. A vote might or might not be taken on March 16. The full, seven-member City Council eventually will decide the issue.

Panther Lake residents voted last November to join the city of Kent. The city’s population will jump July 1 from about 88,380 to 112,380.
