Photographs of the city of Kent’s Mill Creek Canyon Earthworks Park will be featured at a Marvels of Modernism exhibit Thursday at the Design Within Reach studio, 1918 First Ave., in Seattle’s Belltown district.

The public can view the “12 Marvels of Modernism in 2008” at a reception 6 to 8 p.m. at the studio. The 12 “marvels” were selected by The Cultural Landscape Foundation of Washington, D.C.

“The annual thematic Landslide list is one of the key ways the Cultural Landscape Foundation highlights how landscapes are integral to our nation’s cultural identity — each Landslide site is irreplaceable; each is a unique link to the story of who we are,” said Charles A. Birnbaum, founder and president of the Cultural Landscape Foundation.

The 107-acre Earthworks Park is on East Titus Street, east of Kent’s downtown.

The late Herbert Bayer, considered a master of the Bauhaus art movement, designed the earthworks dam and landscape. Bayer said in 1982 that while a dam usually interferes with the natural configuration of the land, he designed the earthworks dam to conform to the surrounding landscape, according to a King County Arts Commission newsletter. Bayer died in 1985.

City crews finished construction of a larger dam at the park last fall.

Among the other Marvels of Modernism are the Pacific Science Center Courtyard at Seattle Center, Manhattan Square Park in Rochester, N.Y., and the Boston City Hall Plaza.
