A fire that started inside an exterior wall forced the evacuation of a local hotel Tuesday afternoon in the 21100 block of 66 Avenue South, the Kent Regional Fire Authority reported.

When Kent RFA firefighters arrived just before 2 p.m.. they found smoke coming from one corner of the four-story building. Because of the location of the fire, firefighters had to cut through the stucco exterior on the second and third stories from ladders, as well as the sheet rock on the interior to reach the fire.

In all, it took over two hours to fully extinguish the smoldering fire.

The Hampton Inn was conducting renovations in the area where the fire started and did not have any guests in that portion of the hotel. There were no reports of injuries.

The cause of the fire was workers using saws that gave off sparks, igniting the wall as they cut through the metal mesh in the stucco exterior.

Because of the difficulty in fighting this fire, two alarms were used, resulting in resources being brought in from the Tukwila FD, Renton RFA, and the Valley RFA. King County Medic One provided rehab for firefighters.
