To encourage a new generation of educators and help address the state’s teacher shortage, Kent-based WGU Washington launched the Future Teacher Scholarship for people seeking a fulfilling career in K-12 education.

According to the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction, 93 percent of principals say they’re “struggling” or in a “crisis” mode to find new, qualified teachers. This scholarship helps smooth the pathway to high-quality and respected credentials for aspiring educators.

Multiple scholarships will be awarded, each valued up to $4,000 ($1,000 per six-month term, up to four terms). Students must fulfill all of the eligibility requirements to be considered for this scholarship – including completion of an application for admission and scholarship application, submission of official transcripts of all prior college work and completion of the FAFSA.

Scholarship applicants must be admitted to WGU Washington and interview with a WGU Washington scholarship counselor. Scholarship applicants must apply for the scholarship up to 60 days prior to their start date and up to 60 days after starting their degree program. Recipients will be selected based on their application answers and interview with the scholarship counselor.

In addition to this scholarship offer, the university – through the end of the year – will waive the $65 application fee for all applicants who use the code GOBACK.

WGU Washington’s Teachers College offers more than 30 bachelor’s and master’s degree programs and has been named the “best value” in teacher education by the National Council on Teacher Quality. Today, over 2,700 students from communities across the state are enrolled in WGU Washington’s Teachers College.

Reaching out to tech students

WGU Washington is reaching out to the hundreds of Washington students displaced by the sudden closure of ITT Tech, launching a scholarship specifically for ITT transfers.

The award has a maximum value of $2,000 ($500 per six-month term, renewable for up to four terms), applied toward WGU Washington’s $6,000-per-12-month-year tuition.

Awards will be granted based on academic record, previous college experience, current competency, and readiness for online study, among other criteria.
