Two Kentridge High School graduates and student-athletes at Western Washington University in Bellingham were named Great Northwest Athletic Conference players of the week.<\/p>\n
Sophomore Stephanie Sewell was recognized as women’s golf player of the week for Oct. 24-30, and redshirt freshman Mae Thungc was honored the defensive volleyball player the week for the same week. Both graduated from Kentridge in 2015.<\/p>\n
Sewell tied for 11th in the 31-player field at the Dennis Rose Intercollegiate at the Waikoloa Beach Resort King’s Course in Hawaii from Oct. 24-25, with a 54-hole score of 20 over par (236).<\/p>\n
She finished the fall season with a team-low average score of 77.9 in five tournaments (10 rounds) and placed in the top 15 in each of the last four tournaments – including a tie for fifth place at the WWU Invitational.<\/p>\n
The Vikings return to action to start up the spring season on Feb. 6-7, 2017, at the Point Loma Reach at the Riverwalk Golf Club in San Diego, Calif.<\/p>\n
Thungc<\/strong><\/p>\n Thungc helped anchor the Vikings defense in a pair of three-game sweeps against Western Oregon and Concordia in confernce play. Thungc averaged 5.5 digs per game (33 total digs) in the two matches.<\/p>\n For the season, the redshirt freshman ranks sixth in the conference averaging 4.71 digs per game. While at Kentridge, Thungc set a school record with 37 digs in one match against Kentlake High.<\/p>\n The Vikings (16-6 overall, 12-2 GNAC) have won 11 consecutive matches.
