Team heads to Kent next winter

After starting their second-round playoff series with a bang, the Seattle Thunderbirds ended with a thud.

One week after a 7-1 rout of Tri-City to begin the Western Hockey League Western Conference semifinals, the Thunderbirds saw their season come to an end last Friday night with a 4-0 loss to the Americans in Kennewick.

Tri-City won the best-of-7 set, four games to one, and will meet the winner of the Spokane-Vancouver series for the conference championship.

After its convincing Game 1 victory, Seattle managed just four more goals in the next four games, and was shut out twice.

The upcoming offseason for the T-birds will include getting ready for their move to the new Kent Events Center. Seattle will begin the 2008-09 season next September in KeyArena while the final touches are put on the Kent facility.

The team’s new home, which will seat 6,025 fans, is expected to be ready in January.

Tri-City scored the only goal it would need last Friday at 14:59 of the first period off the stick of Jason Reese. The Americans increased their lead to 2-0 by the end of two periods, then added another pair of goals in the third.

The Thunderbirds outshot Tri-City, 32-25, but were unable to get a puck past Chet Pickard.
