Kent Police arrested a 34-year-old man following an early Sunday morning standoff at an apartment complex.

Police took man into custody with less lethal force. There no were injuries.

Kent officers responded to a domestic dispute in which the man had threatened his girlfriend with a knife at the Mosaic Hills Apartments in the 10800 block of Southeast 240th Street. When officers contacted the man, they were met with verbal threats and aggressive behavior. Police were able to get the occupants out of the apartment before the man barricaded himself.

Efforts to draw the suspect from the apartment were challenged by the suspect displaying a Molotov cocktail and threatening to kill the officers. Officers continued their efforts to call the man out.

Because of the man’s significant criminal history, which included an active Department of Corrections’ warrant for his arrest, and his threats of violence, SWAT officers responded. A negotiator for the team was also called to the scene and with time and effort, was able to get the suspect to leave the apartment. However, as he exited the apartment, he fled on foot and was immediately stopped by less lethal projectiles.

SWAT officers moved in and, after a brief struggle, the suspect was apprehended.

“We’re very happy that this morning’s arrest came without injury to the suspect or surrounding residents,” said Kent Police Commander Jarod Kasner. “… Although the culminating actions and behavior of the suspect challenged the officers on scene, they performed with professionalism and care for all who were involved.”

The suspect was treated by fire personnel, transported and booked into King County Jail.
