Kent City Council member Dennis Higgins has been elected to the 2015 Board of Directors of the Sound City Association (SCA), which represents 36 cities in King County, and provides a regional voice for nearly one million people.

Representatives from the cities of Auburn, Burien, Covington, Des Moines, Federal Way, Kent, Maple Valley, Normandy Park, Renton, SeaTac and Tukwila elect four people to represent the South Caucus on the board.

This marks Higgins’ second term on the 13-member SCA Board.

“Thanks to the leadership of Councilmember Higgins, SCA enjoyed unprecedented success in our efforts to build long-term community and economic prosperity of our region and state,” said Deanna Dawson, SCA executive director, in a Dec. 30 media release.

SCA provides a voice for King County cities through leadership in areas such as economic and community development, transportation, land use, health, government operations, the environment, education, public safety, social welfare and other public policy issues.

“SCA provides its member cities a powerful regional voice, an opportunity to connect and network, and offers tremendous tools to learn what other cities are doing,” Higgins said. “My involvement with SCA helps me to better serve Kent.”

Higgins and his family have called Kent their home since 1995. He works in the field of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) – computer mapping and analysis, database creation and maintenance. He is a graduate of the University of Washington, and is a certified GIS Professional.

He has served on the Kent Lodging Tax Advisory Committee, and on the Kent School District Citizens’ Facilities Planning Committee, and the Citizens’ Boundary Review Committee. He chaired Citizens for Kent Schools, the community organization that supports KSD levy/bond election campaigns.

He is also the chairman of the Kent Public Works Committee, and serves on the Parks and Human Services Committee. On the regional level, he is representing Kent and SCA on the Regional Transit Committee.

SCA, which was formerly known as the Suburban Cities Association, was established more than 40 years ago to help King County cities act locally and partner regionally to create vital and thriving communities through advocacy, education, leadership, mutual support and networking.
