As Primary ballots arrive in the mail, voters will have plenty of statewide races to narrow the list of candidates, but they won’t determine much in the Kent area as far as choosing finalists to the state Legislature.

No race for the Legislature in the Kent area on the Aug. 7 ballot has more than two candidates, so everyone on the ballot will advance to the Nov. 6 General Election. Kent is served by Districts 33 and 47 in the Legislature. The two candidates with the most votes in each race advance to the General Election.

Voters will decide the outcome on King County Proposition No. 1, the Children and Family Services Center Capital Levy to rebuild the Youth Services Center in Seattle.

The King County Council sent the levy to voters seeking $210 million over nine years to replace what county officials call outdated and failing facilities.

The levy is seven cents per $1,000 assessed valuation, which would cost the owner of a $350,000 home about $25 per year.

Kent voters also will help decide the two finalists in two Congressional races as Rep. Adam Smith, D-Tacoma, seeks another term in District 9 and Rep. Dave Reichert, R-Auburn, seeks reelection in District 8. Smith has four challengers while Reichert has five.

In a statewide race for Congress, U.S. Sen. Maria Cantwell, D-Wash., faces seven challengers.

Voters have many state government positions to narrow to two finalists with their vote including governor, lieutenant governor, secretary of state, treasurer, auditor, attorney general, commissioner of public lands, superintendent of public instruction and insurance commissioner.
