The Des Moines United Methodist Church has begun offering a new style of worship at 11:30 a.m. Sunday mornings. The pNEWma Worship Service (pneuma is the Greek word for spirit) features a worship band, diverse musical styles, interactive events and contemplative rituals. This new service provides an opportunity for people who want something different from a traditional approach to worship.<\/p>\n
The goal is to welcome a broader range of community members into the church.<\/p>\n
\u201cOur church is very committed to reaching out and helping people find the peace, belonging, and empowerment that come with following Jesus Christ,\u201d says Pastor Rev. Karla Fredericksen. \u201cWe are providing new and creative programs for young adults and families as well as strengthening our current programs for children, youth and adults.\u201d<\/p>\n
A worship leader and family ministries coordinator, Cindy Akana, was recently hired to design the new service and develop programs to help meet the spiritual and social needs of young adults and young families.<\/p>\n
\u201cOpen Hearts, Open Minds, Open Doors\u201d is the slogan of Des Moines United Methodist Church.<\/p>\n
\u201cThat means we are open to change and to serving the needs of our congregation as well as our community,\u201d Fredericksen said. \u201cThis is an open, warm and loving faith community where all are welcome\u2014and \u201call\u201d means ALL!\u201d<\/p>\n
Community members are invited to try the new service.<\/p>\n
Des Moines United Methodist continues to have its traditional service featuring the chancel choir and pipe organ at 9 a.m. In addition, a new \u201cOpportunity Hour\u201d at 10:15 a.m. has been added, providing creative faith-building classes for children, youth and adults.<\/p>\n
