Kent Fire Department Regional Fire Authority firefighters responded to an early morning fire at a mobile home in the 800 block of the West Valley Highway in Kent.

The fire displaced the family of four. There were no reports of injuries to the residents or firefighters, but a family pet dog did perish in the fire.

The fire was reported at 3:50 a.m. after one of the resident’s smelled smoke and found that the wood stove door was open and sparks had ignited combustibles near the stove. The rest of the family was awakened and exited the home.

There were no smoke detectors in the home.

The first arriving firefighters reported smoke and flames from the home and immediately attacked the fire. The flames were knocked down within 20 minutes and firefighters then searched for hidden fire in the walls and ceiling. No hidden fire was found and the fire was declared extinguished.

The fire investigators confirmed that the fire started near the wood stove when sparks ignited combustibles near the stove.

Damage was estimated at $10,000. The family does not have homeowner insurance and is receiving housing and other assistance through the American Red Cross.
