{"id":20466,"date":"2013-09-25T17:06:46","date_gmt":"2013-09-26T00:06:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/spiken.wpengine.com\/news\/local-volunteers-do-their-part-for-united-ways-day-of-caring\/"},"modified":"2016-10-23T01:00:40","modified_gmt":"2016-10-23T08:00:40","slug":"local-volunteers-do-their-part-for-united-ways-day-of-caring","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.kentreporter.com\/news\/local-volunteers-do-their-part-for-united-ways-day-of-caring\/","title":{"rendered":"Local volunteers do their part for United Way&#8217;s Day of Caring"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><p><strong>Reporter staff<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><p>More than 12,000 people volunteered at 415 community service projects throughout King County during United Way&#8217;s Day of Caring last Friday.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><p>Volunteers read to children, renovated community centers, filled backpacks with nutritious meals for hungry kids to take home and finished other projects.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><p>In Kent, employees from Auburn-based Zones Inc., joined volunteers to enhance a playground for Panther Lake&#8217;s ECAP (Early Childhood Education and Assistance Program) and Kent Youth and Family Services.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><p>The group replaced sand in the sandbox and bark on the walking path and under the climbing structure, weeded planting beds, planted a variety of flowers and grasses, and replaced railroad ties for the garden wall.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><p>A total of 256 nonprofit agencies got a boost from the volunteer labor, valued at $1.4 million.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><p>The Day of Caring is United Way of King County&#8217;s official kickoff for its 2013-2014 fundraising campaign.
