More than 12,000 people volunteered at 415 community service projects throughout King County during United Way’s Day of Caring last Friday.

Volunteers read to children, renovated community centers, filled backpacks with nutritious meals for hungry kids to take home and finished other projects.

In Kent, employees from Auburn-based Zones Inc., joined volunteers to enhance a playground for Panther Lake’s ECAP (Early Childhood Education and Assistance Program) and Kent Youth and Family Services.

The group replaced sand in the sandbox and bark on the walking path and under the climbing structure, weeded planting beds, planted a variety of flowers and grasses, and replaced railroad ties for the garden wall.

A total of 256 nonprofit agencies got a boost from the volunteer labor, valued at $1.4 million.

The Day of Caring is United Way of King County’s official kickoff for its 2013-2014 fundraising campaign. The organization looks to raise $112.5 million to invest in the community.
