American Legion Post 15 of Kent is hosting an open house Sunday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.<\/p>\n
The event is designed to raise community awareness about the American Legion and its activities, as well as try to drum up increased membership among younger veterans, said Terence Finn, post second-vice president.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe got a lot of young soldiers coming home,\u201d Finn said.<\/p>\n
The American Legion is a private, non-profit organization devoted to community service and helping fellow veterans cut through the bureaucracy to get the benefits and help they earned.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe\u2019ve all done that and we know how to navigate through the red tape,\u201d Finn said.<\/p>\n
Though the group is a private organization, Finn said the Kent Post will be open to the public Sunday. Hot dogs, soda and chips will be served and there will be information booths on hand from the Legion, the Women\u2019s Auxiliary and the Sons of the American Legion, among others.<\/p>\n
In addition, an honor guard demonstration is scheduled for 1 and 3 p.m.<\/p>\n
Finn said membership in the post is $35 per year and is not just open to those who have served in the military, adding that the group\u2019s community service is not just directed to members.<\/p>\n
\u201cThey don\u2019t have to be a member to reap the benefits of the American Legion,\u201d he said. \u201cWe\u2019re making the community aware of what we\u2019re about.\u201d<\/p>\n
American Legion Post 15 is located at 25405 97th Place S. in Kent.<\/p>\n
