Two Kent men told police they’d stolen more than $1,400 worth of ski gear at about 1:20 p.m. Dec. 24 from a store in the 25900 block of 104th Avenue Southeast because they had no jobs or money to buy Christmas gifts.

Kent Police arrested the men for investigation of third-degree theft. A store employee initially chased the two men as they ran with the items from the store, but then men escaped on foot over a fence into a nearby apartment complex.

The men, described as in their late teens or early 20s, were caught by police after an off-duty Washington State Patrol trooper them running with items from the store, followed them and saw the men get into a Honda Civic. The trooper wrote down the license plate number of the vehicle and gave it to Kent Police.

Police located the car later on Dec. 24 in front of a house in the 11700 block of Southeast 264th Place. Officers saw a man drop a ski jacket, ski backpack and snowboard boots near another car on the street.

Officers then apprehended the two men as they were walking on a street about a block east of where police found the Honda Civic.

One suspect told police he wanted to get Christmas gifts for his girlfriend and family, so he and his friend decided to steal the items from the store.

They reportedly took two ski backpacks to carry many of the items. Several of the items were dropped in the ensuing chase with store employees.

Assault

An argument about whether a husband should cook one or two eggs for his wife for breakfast turned into a domestic dispute at about 10:20 a.m. Dec. 24 at a home in the 25100 block of 23rd Place South.

Police arrested the husband for investigation of fourth-degree assault after he reportedly tightly squeezed his wife’s cheek and slapped her in the face, according to the police report.

The wife, who fled to a neighbor’s house before calling 911, told police her husband told her she could have only one egg even though she wanted two eggs for breakfast.

The husband told officers his wife became upset because she wanted two eggs and he made only one egg. He said she kept arguing and brought up an ex-husband who had physically abused her. The man told officers he squeezed her cheek and slapped her to get her to stop yelling.

Police said woman had a red mark on her cheek consistent with being tightly squeezed or slapped by someone.
