The Kent School District announced Thursday that the Summer Free Lunch Program would be extended until school begins.

Originally, Aug. 26 was to be the last day of the program with school set to begin Aug. 31, but the Kent Education Association’s decision to go on strike would have left a gap.

Pending approval from the state, which is expected, the program will restart Monday.

“We’ll extend it as far out as we can,” said program supervisor Larry McKinnis.

The program is open to all children 18 and under and funded through a federal USDA grant.

According to McKinnis, the program this summer served anywhere between 600 and 1,800 kids each day.

A new site, the Russell Road Sports Complex, was also added to the roster of host sites.

The program will continue Monday through Friday at the following locations and times:

Birch Creek Apartments (formerly Springwood Housing), 12910 S.E. 273rd St., noon – 1 p.m.;
