Luke Angevine, Kentwood<\/p>\n
Whether it was football or futbol, the Kentwood junior was one of the top guys on the field. Last fall, he passed for 380 yards and four touchdowns and as an All-SPSL North honorable mention quarterback as the Conquerors went to the postseason for the eighth time in the past nine years. This spring, he had four goals and two assists to help Kentwood win the SPSL North Division title and advance to state.<\/p>\n
Demetrius Bronson, Kentwood<\/p>\n
The University of Washington-bound senior continued to drop jaws this past fall, rushing for 1,450 yards and 12 touchdowns in 10 games. Those numbers become even more impressive when considering that Bronson missed 2 1\/2 games with an ankle injury. But when Bronson played, he delivered. He scored at least once in every game he suited up, eclipsed the 200-yard mark three times and finished his prep career with a Kentwood-best 3,569 yards rushing, breaking the previous mark established by John Gardenhire.<\/p>\n
Sean Harris, Kent-Meridian<\/p>\n
Harris polished off his Royals football career by catching 21 passes for 364 yards and three touchdowns, averaging 17.3 yards per catch and earning All-SPSL North second-team status as a wide receiver. This spring, he gave Garfield\u2019s Stephone Jordan one last run for it in the 110-meter hurdles at the Star Track state meet in Pasco. Jordan pulled it out, but Harris still went home with the silver medal.<\/p>\n
Max Manthou, Kentwood<\/p>\n
This powerful-swinging sophomore is now halfway to his goal of winning four Class 4A state boys singles titles. Manthou, already with back-to-back division, league and district crowns, notched No. 2 on the state scene when he defeated Juanita\u2019s James Russell in the final at the Vancouver Tennis Center, 6-2, 6-4. There\u2019s every chance those two could meet again next spring, as Russell is a junior.<\/p>\n
Zach Smith, Kentlake<\/p>\n
A year-round competitor, Smith\u2019s name is well known. But at the state level, he didn\u2019t reach elite status until last month. A junior, Smith missed most of the last two years after a lower-back injury his freshman season. Any thoughts he wasn\u2019t yet at 100 percent were put to rest in May during the Star Track state meet in Pasco, where Smith captured the long jump crown with a lifetime-best leap of 23 feet, 3 inches. The title was the first ever for track and field in Kentlake\u2019s 11-year history.<\/p>\n
Brandon Turner, Kentridge<\/p>\n
The well-spoken Charger senior, who\u2019s now heading to the Naval Academy, helped Kentridge get to the state playoffs in two sports once again. The veteran quarterback completed 54 percent of his passes (74 of 138) for 787 yards and five touchdowns, and ran it 152 times for 754 yards and 14 touchdowns as KR went 6-4 overall, advancing to the regional round of the 4A state playoffs. During the winter, the 6-foot-4 Turner averaged 12.5 points as Kentridge won the SPSL North title and returned to the state tournament, coming within one win of a trophy.<\/p>\n
Tyler Weinbrecht, Kentwood<\/p>\n
The Conqueror senior was an impact performer on the football last fall. He caught seven passes for 109 yards and two touchdowns, averaging 15.6 yards per catch, and also was a force on the defensive line. Weinbrecht was an All-SPSL North first-team on both sides of the ball and was nominated for the All-State game.
