The Tacoma woman who allegedly shot and injured a Kent man Tuesday outside a Panther Lake Starbucks reportedly told her mother she shot the man because he had raped her.

Kent Police arrested the woman, 24, for investigation of first-degree assault. The woman remained in custody Thursday at the King County jail in Seattle with bail set at $1 million.

Charges have not yet been filed against the woman, said Dan Donohoe, spokesman for the King County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office. The court found probable cause for assault. She is scheduled to appear in court July 18 after she waived her appearance at a bail hearing on Wednesday.

The woman fled the strip mall in the 10700 block of Southeast 208th Street right after the 12:20 p.m. shooting. Officers found the 23-year-old man lying just outside the coffee shop with a gunshot wound to his face, according to probable cause documents. The man had trouble speaking but wrote down the name of the woman who shot him.

After fleeing the scene, the woman called her mother to tell her she had shot the man because he had raped her, according to a statement the mother gave to police. The woman turned herself in a couple of hours after the shooting to Tacoma Police.

Detectives confirmed the woman bought a 45-caliber handgun in May 2013. Detectives recovered a spent .45-caliber cartridge case at the shooting scene.

Police also reviewed video surveillance footage from a nearby business that captured the shooting. The video showed the man and woman walking to the Starbucks when the woman pulled out a gun from her purse and shot the man.

Paramedics treated the man for a gunshot wound to the head and transported him to a hospital. He is expected to survive, according to probable cause documents.

Police have not yet released the connection between the man and the woman. The woman declined to speak to detectives about the case.
