The East Hill Elementary community is celebrating the grand opening of the Parent Engagement Resource Center from 6-8:30 p.m. Feb. 24. The PERC, which encloses a former breezeway at the school, allows the students to eat their meals in one location rather than in classrooms. The remodel also provides parents and community members space for classes and meetings.

The construction of the 5,754-square-foot facility was funded through the district’s 2006 bond issue.

“The intent of the PERC is to not only have a central location for students to eat their meals, but provide a space in the school for the East Hill community and to create stronger connections between the community and the school,” noted Principal Daxa Thomas.

Thomas said the celebration, complete with ribbon cutting, also is the school’s multicultural celebration. Last year the multicultural event was a success, with families participating by bringing foods from many cultures to the potluck. Thomas noted parents and families seemed to make deeper connections to the school community.

In addition to the dedication ceremony and multicultural night, the school will unveil a mural created by students, staff members, Kent Mayor Suzette Cooke, and Superintendent Edward Lee Vargas. The mural is meant to represent the many students who attend the school and allow them to leave a legacy for generations to come.
