The Portland Winterhawks<\/a> defeated the Seattle Thunderbirds<\/a> 4-1 the afternoon of Sept. 3 in the first game at the Everett Silvertips Preseason Tournament.<\/a><\/p>\n This was the T-Birds’ and Winterhawks’ first game each at the tournament.<\/p>\n The Winterhawks took a 2-0 lead after 20 minutes on goals by Oliver and Gabriel and Liam Darragh. Gabriel’s goal was shorthanded and came at 3:58 of the first period. Darragh scored at 4:33 on an assist from Gabriel.<\/p>\n Gabriel put the Winterhawks ahead 3-0 18 seconds into the third period on assists from Darragh and Nic Petan.<\/p>\n Charles Wells got the T-Birds on the board at 9:54 of the second with a power-play goal. The puck deflected off the glass alone the boards to Wells in the right circle. Wells turned and quickly snapped off a wrist shot that beat Portland goalie Mac Carruth over the blocker. Well’s goal was unassisted.<\/p>\n Portland took a 4-1 lead at 2:04 of the third period on a goal by Ty Rattie. Sven Bartschi had the only assist on the goal.<\/p>\n Seattle goalie Michael Salmon played the first 30 minutes of the game. He was replaced by Matt Krahn at the midway point of the second period.<\/p>\n Carruth played the whole game for Portland.<\/p>\n The T-Birds next game at the Everett tournament was Sept. 4 against the Spokane Chiefs.<\/p>\n The T-Birds home opener is against the Winterhawks at ShoWare Center 7:05 p.m. Sept. 25.<\/p>\n
