A Sunday evening fire at an apartment building on the West Hill has left three Kent families temporarily homeless.

The Kent Fire Department, South King Fire and Rescue and Medic One crews were called to the scene of an apartment fire in the 23800 block of 30th Avenue South at approximately 11:30 p.m. Sunday.

Upon arrival, crews found heavy smoke and flames from a third floor unit of the building, according to a press release from the Kent Fire Department. Fire crews were able to quickly control the flames and limit the fire damage to the unit where the fire began.

Residents of the unit where the fire started were at home and asleep at the time of the fire, but were able to escape with only the clothes on their back.

Neither of the residents were injured, but the contents of the home are a complete loss.

Two units below the one where the fire began were rendered uninhabitable due to water damage.

The Red Cross provided accommodations for the victims of the blaze. The management of the apartment complex also provided housing for one of the displaced families.

The investigation into the fire is ongoing. Damage estimates are not available at this time.
