A city of Kent employee was successfully rescued Wednesday after he was injured in a fall that left him approximately 15 feet underground in one of the city’s sewer pumping stations.

The incident was first reported at 2:11 p.m. Wednesday in the 21200 block of Frager Road along the Green River, according to a Kent Fire Department media release. The man had fallen an unknown distance while working on a portion of the sewer system.

Because space was limited, Kent firefighters used a hoisting system to bring the patient out once they had secured him onto a backboard. The backboard was necessary to limit movement and reduce the chance of aggravating any injuries the patient may have suffered when he fell. The man suffered non-life threatening injuries.

The Kent Fire Department has a fully trained confined space rescue team. A confined space is one that is not intended for continual human occupation and that can contain a low oxygen or toxic atmosphere.
