Kent firefighters responded to two house fires Monday morning on the East Hill.

The first fire at 1 a.m. in the 12400 block of Southeast 235th Street displaced a family of three and was caused by a discarded cigarette smoldering in an upholstered chair, according to a Kent Fire Department media release.

The second fire at 6:48 a.m. in the 11000 block of Southeast 217th Street sent a woman to the hospital and was caused by a malfunction in an electrical device, according to fire investigators.

In the first fire, smoke alarms and the smell of smoke woke up a family of three. The homeowner got up to investigate and found smoke throughout the house. The family left the house and called 911. Nobody was injured. Fire officials estimated damage at $100,000.

Firefighters found smoke and flames showing from one side of the house and extinguished the fire in about 15 minutes. The family will stay with relatives in the area.

In the second fire, paramedics transported a woman to a local hospital as a precaution due to smoke inhalation. Her injures were not considered life threatening. The woman suffered smoke inhalation when she tried to reenter the home for valuables.

The fire was limited to one room of the single-story home. But smoke damage throughout the house makes it uninhabitable. Fire investigators estimated damage at $150,000. Family members will care for the woman after her release from the hospital.

Renton firefighters assisted with the second fire.
