State Rep. Tina Orwall, D-Des Moines, is the only Kent-area incumbent who will face more than one challenger in this year’s races for the Legislature in Olympia.

Orwall will face off against John Potter, R-Burien, and Charles Schaefer, of Burien, a Libertarian candidate as she seeks to retain her District 33, position one House seat. District 33 covers Kent’s West Hill and part of the Kent Valley.

Candidates had to file by Friday with King County Elections to appear on the Aug. 9 primary ballot and Nov. 8 general election ballot. The two candidates with the most votes in the primary advance to the general election.

The other District 33 House race features incumbent Mia Su-Ling Gregerson, D-SeaTac, against Pamela Pollock, R-Des Moines. Gregerson lost her SeaTac City Council seat in the 2015 election and Pollock hopes to knock Gregerson out of Olympia.

In District 47 House races, incumbent Pat Sullivan, D-Covington, will once again clash with challenger Barry Knowles, R-Covington. Sullivan defeated Knowles two years ago. District 47 includes much of Kent’s East Hill.

Incumbent Mark Hargrove, R-Covington, will be challenged by Brooke Valentine, D-Covington, in the other House District 47 race.

Three seats are on the ballot in District 11, which includes a northern section of Kent’s East Hill.

State Sen. Bob Hasegawa, D-Seattle, faces a challenge from Dennis Price, of Renton, a Libertarian candidate. State Rep. Zach Hudgins, D-Tukwila, will try to keep his House seat against Erin Smith Aboudara, R-Renton. Nobody challenged State Rep. Steve Bergquist, D-Renton, for the other House seat.

In statewide races, King County Councilman Dave Upthegrove, whose District 5 includes parts of Kent, is running for Commissioner of Public Lands. The Des Moines Democrat is one of seven candidates for the office. Incumbent Peter Goldmark announced earlier this year he would not seek a third term.

On the Federal level, Kent voters will decide whether to keep District 8 Congressman Dave Reichert, R-Auburn, and District 9 Congressman Adam Smith, D-Renton in office. Reichert faces five challengers. Smith has four challengers.
