The fire benefit charge (FBC) used by the Kent Regional Fire Authority (RFA) was enacted by the state Legislature to stabilize the “peaks and valleys” that occur in gathering revenue. This allows the RFA to sustain high-quality services to residents even in tough economic times.

The RFA is allowed to set the fire benefit charge at up to 60 percent of its operating budget. The Kent RFA has been conservative in using the FBC, never exceeding 48 percent.

Given its track record of using restraint, I will be voting yes on Proposition 1 to re-authorize the fire benefit charge on April 26. I encourage you to cast your vote in favor of re-authorization, so we can keep the high-quality services that we have come to rely on.
