As a high school teacher of American Government, I taught two generations of Kent students that elected leaders serve to represent the will of the governed.

How would I now explain to them that what the mayor and Kent City Council are doing follows this basic American democratic tenant?

The majority of Kent residents voted to legalize medical marijuana and recreational marijuana.

The mayor and council are telling the citizens who elected them and whom they represent, “We don’t care what you voted into law, we are not going to let you have it in our city! No legal medical or legal recreational marijuana stores in our city!”

Many people I talk to who voted for both initiatives believe that what the mayor and council are doing is an abuse of their power.

I taught my students that in a representative democratic government, abuse of power at any level of government is an impeachable offense.

Any thoughts mayor or council?
