{"id":16719,"date":"2015-12-28T16:57:48","date_gmt":"2015-12-29T00:57:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/spiken.wpengine.com\/news\/state-crews-clean-up-oil-spill-on-kent-wetland\/"},"modified":"2016-10-22T00:45:25","modified_gmt":"2016-10-22T07:45:25","slug":"state-crews-clean-up-oil-spill-on-kent-wetland","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.kentreporter.com\/news\/state-crews-clean-up-oil-spill-on-kent-wetland\/","title":{"rendered":"State crews clean up oil spill on Kent wetland"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><p>Crews from the state Department of Ecology (DOE) spent all day Monday cleaning up an oil spill on a Kent Valley wetland.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><p>\u201cThis could take a while,\u201d state DOE officials said on the department\u2019s Facebook page. \u201cWe figure at least two more days to clean thick black oil from a wetland in Kent.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><p>State officials said the spill was reported Sunday night, but may have been there a while because oil had been there at least since the water on the city-owned wetland was at least 2 feet higher. Crews started the cleanup at 7:30 a.m. during first light.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><p>The source of the spill remains unknown. The spill contains an estimated 300 gallons of oil over a 1.5-acre site on a 24-acre wetland owned by the city off a dead end on <a title=\"map\" href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/place\/S+216th+St+%26+72nd+Ave+S,+Kent,+WA+98032\/@47.4074826,-122.2415254,639m\/data=!3m1!1e3!4m2!3m1!1s0x54905c71ba290c91:0x45f78ba28d1afbb7!6m1!1e1\" target=\"_self\">South 216th Street<\/a>, west of Highway 167 and east of 72nd Avenue South.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><p>\u201cWe have crews working with small skimmers and vacuums,\u201d the DOE said. \u201cAlso trimming oiled vegetation. No bird impacts observed so far.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><p>State officials said wetland spills can be very complex, and sometimes some oil cannot be removed if doing so would be more harmful to habitat.
