Dawn Smith, a former Kent resident and a graduate of Kent-Meridian High School, was recently named the 2011 Texas Middle School Principal of the Year.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

Smith, known as Dawn Bash when she graduated from Kent-Meridian in the early 1970s, was chosen in May for the award by the Texas Elementary Principals and Supervisors Association<\/a>. She is principal at Daniel Intermediate School in Duncanville, Texas.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

Smith will represent Texas in October at the National Distinguished Principals program held in Washington, D.C. She will also be awarded a check for $10,000, thanks to a generous donation from long-time Texas Elementary Principals and Supervisors Association business partners Horace Mann and Pearson.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

\u201cDawn\u2019s passion and love for education is truly a bright light,\u201d said Sandi Borden, executive director of the Texas Elementary Principals and Supervisors Association. \u201cNot only has she transformed education for many Duncanville students, she\u2019s also served as a mentor to other award-winning school leaders.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
