Three members each were picked by the Kent City Council on Tuesday for the pro and con committees on an advisory vote about whether the city should adopt a fireworks ban.

Gwen Allen-Carston, Dave McDongal and Richard Brandau are members of the committee in favor of a fireworks ban. Richard Wilkinson, Lorraine Brinkman and Colin Hauck are members of the committee against a ban.

The council appointed the committees to write arguments in favor and against the ban for the Nov. 3 general election King County Voters’ Pamphlet. Each committee’s statement must be no more than 200 words and submitted to King County Elections by Aug. 13. Any rebuttal statements are due by Aug. 17.

The council decided to ask voters on the Nov. 3 ballot whether the sale, possession and discharge of consumer fireworks should be prohibited in the city.

It is only an advisory proposition. The council will use the results of the vote to help determine whether to ban fireworks in the city. The Fourth of July Splash fireworks display and other permitted events still would be allowed.
