For the Reporter

Highline Community College is one of the nation’s best colleges to work for, according to a new survey by The Chronicle of Higher Education, a top news source for colleges and universities.

The results, released today in The Chronicle’s sixth annual report on “The Academic Workplace,” are based on a survey of more than 44,000 employees at 300 colleges and universities. Only 97 of the 300 institutions received “Great Colleges to Work For” status. Highline was the only two-year school in Washington state to be honored.

“I appreciate that the College’s efforts on diversity and faculty assessment of the teaching environment are worthy of national recognition,” said HCC President, Dr. Jack Bermingham. “Highline truly is committed to student engagement.”

Highline was recognized in two categories, including:

• Diversity: The college makes a concerted effort to create a welcoming and fair environment for all employees.

• Teaching Environment: Faculty members say the institution recognizes innovative and high-quality teaching.

The survey results are based on a two-part assessment process: an institutional audit that captured demographics and workplace policies from each institution, and a survey administered to faculty, administrators and staff.

Highline was also recognized by The Chronicle as a “Great College to Work For” in 2010.

“Great Colleges to Work For” is one of the largest and most respected workplace-recognition programs in the country.
