More than 600 people applied for about 100 ShoWare Center job openings in Kent.

The city-owned arena hosted a job fair for four hours July 27 to seek applicants for part-time jobs in operations, box office, guest services, concessions, catering, kitchen, security and housekeeping.

“We anticipated several hundred and it stayed strong throughout the four hours,” said Beth Sylves, ShoWare marketing director. “There is a lot of interest in working in our building.”

Arena officials plan to hire 80 to 100 people because of a busy schedule coming up this fall and winter. The new hires will bring the number of employees up to about 250. The jobs pay between $8.75 to $11.50 per hour.

“We are increasing our staffing levels for the start of a busy fall and winter season, including hockey games, the circus, Disney On Ice, concerts, sporting events and more,” Sylves said.

The Seattle Thunderbirds junior hockey team plays home games at the ShoWare Center.

Ushers, ticket takers, ticket sellers, parking attendants, concession stand cashiers and bartenders are among the positions to be filled.

“A lot of people work here as a second job or are retired,” Sylves said. “They are great jobs to do as an activity. A lot of our ushers are retired.”

Staff Pro and A&A Housekeeping services also participated in the job fair. Staff Pro hires security personnel for the ShoWare Center, CenturyLink Field in Seattle and the Tacoma Dome.
