The Kentwood football team was in need of an offensive spark last Friday night at French Field.<\/p>\n
Down 7-6 in the third quarter against Kentlake in what amounted to a survival game for a South Puget Sound League playoff berth, the Conquerors needed something \u2014 anything.<\/p>\n
During a season when new heroes seem to be sprouting up weekly, another one emerged for Kentwood.<\/p>\n
Running back Joseph Banks, who hadn\u2019t seen the ball the entire first half, provided the lift. On KW\u2019s second possession of the third quarter, the shifty 185-pounder split the right side of Kentlake\u2019s defense, then out-ran a host of Falcons for an 86-yard touchdown.<\/p>\n
The run keyed Kentwood\u2019s 24-13 victory, which helped the Conquerors seal their league-best 10th straight playoff berth.<\/p>\n
\u201cI felt that if I get (the ball), I need to make the best of it. And that\u2019s what I did,\u201d said Banks, who finished the night with 102 yards rushing and the touchdown on just six carries.<\/p>\n
Teammate Darrius Coleman added 193 yards and two touchdowns on 20 carries.<\/p>\n
But the difference on Friday proved to be Banks\u2019 big play.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt was really key,\u201d said Coleman, who eclipsed the 1,000-yard mark for the season in the win. \u201cHe sparked our whole team up again and that\u2019s what we needed. We needed a spark. And he found a way to do it.\u201d<\/p>\n
With the win, Kentwood (6-2 in league, 7-2 overall) clinched the North Division\u2019s No. 2 seed to the district playoffs. The Conquerors will play Edmonds-Woodway (7-2), the No. 2 seed from the Wesco South, at 7:30 p.m. on Friday at French Field. The Warriors knocked off Shorecrest last Friday, 41-17.<\/p>\n
Auburn, Kentwood, Federal Way and Tahoma nabbed the SPSL North\u2019s four playoff berths. Kentwood\u2019s victory dropped Tahoma down to the division\u2019s No. 4 seed.<\/p>\n
Kentwood beat Kentlake for the sixth straight time. And considering the situation, Kentwood coach Rex Norris and the Conquerors felt a certain level of relief after the win.<\/p>\n
\u201cI can\u2019t think of a team that doesn\u2019t feel that way,\u201d said Norris, whose team started 0-2 in league play. \u201cWe\u2019ve had to go loser-out for six straight weeks. We came through some tough opponents and we\u2019ve come through some adversity. We answered some questions.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe\u2019re going to celebrate this tonight.\u201d<\/p>\n
On the flip side was Kentlake (4-4, 4-5), a team that hasn\u2019t qualified for the postseason since 2003. But Friday night, the Falcons certainly put themselves in position for the program\u2019s biggest win in years.<\/p>\n
The Falcons took a 7-6 lead into halftime after linebacker Carson Crooks returned an interception 71 yards for a score. Offensively, however, the Falcons simply couldn\u2019t get into gear. They managed just 24 yards of total offense during the first half and 98 for the game.<\/p>\n
\u201cOnce again offensively, we weren\u2019t able to help our defense out,\u201d Kentlake coach Mike Shepard said.<\/p>\n
Despite its stagnant offense, the Falcons remained alive well into the third quarter.<\/p>\n
\u201cI think it was a game until that (86-yard run). That kind of broke our back,\u201d Shepard said. \u201cI think that was the straw that set the house of cards falling.\u201d<\/p>\n
Banks\u2019 touchdown followed by a two-point conversion run from Devin St. Clair gave Kentwood a 14-7 lead with 4:11 remaining in the third.<\/p>\n
On Kentlake\u2019s next possession, running back Tayler Angevine was stripped of the ball at the Falcons\u2019 8-yard line. Kentwood\u2019s Taylor Hughes swooped in for the recovery, setting up a 25-yard field goal by Matt Bell.<\/p>\n
The Conquerors pushed their lead to 24-17 midway through the fourth on a 36-yard touchdown run by Coleman.<\/p>\n
\u201cHe\u2019s been a workhorse for us all season,\u201d Norris said.<\/p>\n
Kentlake finally got its offense going with less than seven minutes remaining when quarterback Lewi Larson engineered a 10-play, 86-yard drive capped by a 23-yard touchdown pass to Tyler Wright.<\/p>\n
But it was too little, too late for the Falcons.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe were feeling pretty good coming into this game,\u201d Shepard said. \u201cWe felt we could run our offense, but clearly, didn\u2019t do it.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u2022 Kentridge 10, Kent-Meridian 7: Kent-Meridian running back Artise Gauldin continued to run wild, going for 130 yards on 23 carries, but it wasn\u2019t enough to upend the Chargers, who closed out their North Division schedule with a win.<\/p>\n
Quarterback Brandon Reiter punched in a 1-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter and added a two-point conversion to lead the Chargers (4-4 in league, 5-4 overall).<\/p>\n
Kent-Meridian (1-7, 1-6) took a 7-0 lead in the first quarter on a 5-yard touchdown run from David Jones. The Royals would cling to the lead until Reiter\u2019s big play in the fourth quarter.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
