For the Reporter<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/p>\n The National Weather Service has forecast temperatures between the high 80s and low-to-mid 90s with little chance of rain over the next 10 days in the valley.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n These weather conditions can create problems for anyone, especially the elderly, the young, and the unprepared.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n Stay cool:<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/p>\n \u2022\u00a0Stay indoors \u2013 especially if you are sensitive to the sun and heat. Consider visiting a mall, theatre, or other air-conditioned location.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n \u2022\u00a0Shut the blinds or drapes on any windows that receive morning or afternoon sun.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n \u2022\u00a0Dress in lightweight clothing.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n \u2022\u00a0Check on elderly family members and acquaintances frequently.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n Drink liquids:<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/p>\n \u2022\u00a0Drink plenty of water or other non-caffeinated\/alcohol beverages.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n \u2022\u00a0Take bottled water if you plan on spending time outdoors. Bring extras for those who forget to plan ahead.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n When outdoors:<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/p>\n \u2022\u00a0Limit your exposure to direct sunlight.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n \u2022\u00a0Wear sunscreen on all exposed skin surfaces. Children are especially susceptible to burning.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n \u2022\u00a0Wear a hat.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n \u2022\u00a0Consider scheduling strenuous activities during the early morning or in the evening when it is cooler.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n \u2022\u00a0Never leave children or pets unattended in a vehicle \u2013 even for a short period of time.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n Water safety:<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/p>\n \u2022\u00a0Always supervise children when near any body of water.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n \u2022\u00a0Wear a properly fitting, Coast Guard approved life jacket.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n \u2022\u00a0Swim at locations that have a lifeguard on duty.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n \u2022\u00a0River and lake water temperatures are still very low and can quickly sap your strength.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n \u2022\u00a0Always take a buddy and a cell phone when near the water.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n Recognize the signs of heat exhaustion and hyperthermia:<\/p>\n<\/p>\n \u2022\u00a0Headache<\/p>\n<\/p>\n \u2022\u00a0Muscle cramping<\/p>\n<\/p>\n \u2022\u00a0Profuse sweating<\/p>\n<\/p>\n \u2022\u00a0Nausea<\/p>\n<\/p>\n \u2022\u00a0Vomiting<\/p>\n<\/p>\n \u2022\u00a0Fainting<\/p>\n<\/p>\n If you or someone with you exhibits some or all of these symptoms, get to a cool place and call 911 if needed.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
