Regarding the uproar over a comment made by City Councilman Les Thomas: Why can he not have an opinion and be free to state it? What is happening to the values and precepts our wonderful country was founded on … like free speech?

If one member of the City Council calls for a “moment of silence,” why can’t another member object?

This has certainly been blown out of proportion.

It is interesting that on Aug. 9, a young black man named Michael Brown was shot and killed by a white policeman, and it got the attention of the mainstream media, our president, etc.

On Aug. 11, in Salt Lake City, a young white man, Dillon Taylor, was shot and killed by a black policeman. No news coverage other than local. No notice by our president. Is Dillon to get a moment of silence also?

Two young men, killed days apart, and both incidences treated so differently. Both tragedies, certainly, but isn’t it time to let our legal system handle these matters and not continue to make everything a racial issue?

Mr. Thomas has served our community well for many years. Let’s keep things in perspective.
