A total of 106 events throughout Kent participated in the city’s 28th annual National Night Out.

An estimated 18,000 people participated in the Aug. 2 event.

The night included 27 events on the East Hill, 25 in the Valley, 21 on the West Hill and 33 in the Panther Lake area, according to stats recently released by city officials. Panther Lake nearly doubled the 16 events it had in 2010, just a month after the area annexed to Kent.

Local events included potlucks, barbecues, dessert socials, and informal gatherings to bring communities together while heightening crime awareness, strengthening neighborhood spirit, and sending a message to criminals that neighborhoods are fighting back.

The city sent 104 visitors to events, including representatives from the council, mayor’s office, information technology, parks department, employee services, public works, department of corrections, economic and community development, finance, police and fire.

Community sponsors included the Seattle Thunderbirds, Kent Target, Dominos Pizza and Clear Channel.
