But the Kentwood High fastpitch team certainly took a big step Wednesday afternoon to securing its first South Puget Sound League North Division title since 1994. Behind another strong pitching performance by ace Kayla Evans and a key two-run double by Sophia Mastroianni in the second inning, the Conquerors turned back rival Kentlake, 6-2.

With the win, Kentwood (13-0) tightened its grip on the top spot in the North Division. The Conquerors hold a three-game cushion over Thomas Jefferson (10-3) and Auburn Riverside (10-3) and can clinch the title outright Thursday with a win over Tahoma (6-7).

“We have three games left and we know that, at some point, the way the league has played, anybody can beat us,” said Kentwood coach Jason Wisor. “We’ll show up tomorrow and try and do it again.”

Evans went the distance in the circle, scattering nine hits and striking out three.

Mastroianni’s second-inning double gave Kentwood a 3-0 lead. It was all the runs Evans would need.

“We’ve found numerous ways to win and every part of the lineup is delivering,” Wisor said. “The kids have the confidence and they’re playing relaxed. I think I am the most nervous one out there.”

The loss dropped Kentlake (9-4) into fourth place in the North. The top five teams from the division advance to the postseason.
