Last week’s printed edition featured a letter to the editor about “dishonest tactics” on the part of the Kent School District and Citizens for Kent Schools.

It accused both parties of lying to voters in the way their language was used to inform and promote awareness about the bond on the April 26 ballot. While I appreciate the passion of its author, he’s just wrong.

This unfounded attack on the character of the people involved in the bond issue is frustrating. The language used to promote a successful bond was thoughtfully crafted to be clear and concise, not devious and misleading. Tax rates will remain the same; old bonds are expiring and new ones will replace them. That is the plain truth expressed by the factual information on the Kent School District website and by Citizens for Kent Schools. No slight of hand or trickery involved.

This is an easy vote to cast. Buildings and infrastructure require care and maintenance to function well. That costs money. Our kids need safe, modern facilities to grow and attain a 21st century education. They deserve this long term investment in order to be successful. And successful students better our communities as they move into the job market, purchase homes and shop in our stores.

The author did get one thing right. There is no free lunch. We have to tend our garden if we want anything to grow.
