It’s the biggest weekend of the season for 3-year-olds as Emerald Downs’ presents an important stakes doubleheader for sophomores on Aug. 13-14.

On Saturday, Aug. 13, fillies race 1-1/8 miles in the $65,000 Washington Oaks. And Sunday, Aug. 14, the males take their turn in the $65,000 Emerald Downs Derby at 1-1/8 miles.

The 3-year-old filly division has been a scramble all season with three stakes yielding three different winners—Class Included in the 6-½-furlong Seattle Handicap, Elusive Noise in the one-mile Irish Day Handicap and Carrabelle Harbor in the 1-1/16-mile Kent Handicap.

Hall of Fame trainer Jerry Hollendorfer (his formal induction is Friday, Aug. 12) has nominated a pair of hundred-grand earners to the Washington Oaks. Alec’s Moon (11-4-2-1-$125,670) won two stakes in Portland including the $82,000 Portland Meadows Oaks and a victory over boys in the $32,000 PM Derby.

Cathy’s Crunches (11-5-3-2-$201,580) is a triple stakes winner at Golden Gate Fields and graded stakes-placed at Santa Anita.

Zayda has assumed control of the 3-year-old division with triumphs in the one-mile Pepsi Cola Handicap (via DQ) and 1-1/16-mile Seattle Slew Handicap. The son of Bluegrass Cat is improving with distance and should relish the extra ground in the Derby.

Couldabenthewhisky, last year’s Top Juvenile at Emerald Downs, finished a good second in the Seattle Slew and also is proven around two turns. Hollendorfer has nominated a pair for the Derby as well—Cody Peak, a stakes-placed son of Thunder Gulch, and Life Is a Rock, a double allowance winner on turf at Golden Gate.
