City should ban fireworks

My wife and I think that we in the USA celebrate one of our most important holidays with an unfortunate traditional activity. We have come to dread the Fourth of July because of the unorganized fireworks activity. It begins several days early and continues several days later. Regulating it is impractical and virtually non-existent.

Some fireworks today border on military ordinance. They shake windows in the house, scare pets beyond reason, leave spent rockets on our property and roof, require us to keep hoses prepared to fight fires, and of course lose sleep. We don’t dare leave town and leave our house unprotected.

Several more progressive jurisdictions around Kent have enacted bans. Our City Council members wring their hands every year, agree to “study the problem,” but do nothing to prevent the activity.

If there are fires associated with fireworks this year, Kent must bear responsibility. With climate change and drought now an accepted fact, it is irresponsible to delay action for another year.
