After reading Ms. Gill’s letter, I am wondering if Ms. Gill and Mr. (Les) Thomas have missed the point on this situation.

I do not think it is our job to establish that Michael Brown was not a good person, or even that he had little respect for the law, and therefore deserved to die. Rather, the point here is that a young man’s life was tragically snuffed out and a policeman’s life interrupted in a way that may never be repaired.

If Mr. Thomas had been asked to observe a moment of silence in order to recognize a boy’s life lost under deplorable circumstances, might he have reacted differently?

Certainly, if it were my boy shot down, no matter what the circumstances, I would be glad to know that my fellow citizens were gathering and observing a moment of silence to validate that my boy lived and that they were saddened that he had died.

Ms. Gill gives us a thorough lecture on what needs to be done so that nobody is let off the hook. There seem to be no free passes in her book. That may be all well and good, but I think the greater story here is that a young man was killed. I think we should grieve for him and for the police officer who shot him.

I think compassion and tolerance are what’s called for at this time.
