The parents in Kent have demanded a plan to deal with reducing class size since April.<\/p>\n
The Kent School District has not responded, and has, in fact, made the unconscionable decision to provoke a strike by sitting on a multi-million-dollar surplus in its “Rainy Day Fund,” rather than deal with the issue of class size.<\/p>\n
Obviously their priorities are neither with the teachers, nor the students, nor the parents. The question must be asked, where, then, are the priorities? And why?<\/p>\n
Parents deserve an answer. So does the whole community of teachers.<\/p>\n
The whole problem could be solved by using available money from the “Rainy Day Fund.”<\/p>\n
If there is one issue all educators agree is critical for effective education, that issue is class size.<\/p>\n
Legally, Washington state school districts are required to keep a 2.5-3 percent fund balance. KSD’s fund balance is at about 8 percent.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
