A 39-year-old Kent man pleaded not guilty Tuesday in King County Superior Court to a charge of first-degree assault in connection with a shooting of another man in the leg on Sept. 18 at a Scenic Hill home.

Kent Police arrested David Jay Craig Sept. 19 at his home in the 1300 block of East Maple Street, east of downtown Kent, for investigation of first-degree assault.

According to charging papers, a 38-year-old Kent man picked up Craig, who was hitchhiking Sept. 18 along Central Avenue South. The man agreed to give Craig a ride home.

Craig reportedly invited the man inside, then asked the victim to go to the basement to watch a movie, but the man told police he declined the invitation.

The man told officers that Craig then “snapped” and went into a bedroom and came out with a shotgun. According to reports, Craig fired one shot into a wall. The man then tried to take the gun from him. During the struggle, the gun went off and hit the man in the leg.

The victim fled the home to a neighbor’s house. Paramedics took him to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle to be treated for a single gunshot wound to the leg.

Craig initially told police that he shot the man because he was an intruder in his home.

Craig is scheduled to return to court Nov. 13, when a trial date could be set or the hearing rescheduled if either prosecutor or the defense requests more time to prepare the case.

He is being held in the county jail at the Norm Maleng Regional Justice Center in Kent in lieu of $210,000 bail.
