The Kent-based Seattle Thunderbirds junior hockey team has signed goalie Danny Mumaugh to a Western Hockey League contract.

Mumaugh, from Centennial, Colo., played last season for the Colorado Thunderbirds in the Tier 1 Elite Midget Minor League for players under age 16. In 32 games he had a 26-3-3 record with 12 shutouts, a 1.12 goals against average and a .939 save percentage. Mumaugh is 5 feet 11 and 164 pounds.

“I think this is a great opportunity for my hockey development,” said Mumaugh in a T-Birds media release. “I have always wanted to play in the Western Hockey League and I am excited for this opportunity.”

“We are excited to have Dan commit to the Thunderbirds,” said T-Birds General Manager Russ Farwell. “We expect him to compete strongly for a spot on our team this coming season. He is a very talented young goalie with a promising future due to a very focused and mature approach to his game. We look forward to seeing him at camp in the fall.”

Mumaugh, 16, attended the T-Birds rookie camp prior to the 2011-12 season as a free agent invite. His performance impressed the team’s hockey operations staff and he was added to the T-Birds 50-player protected list. Mumaugh continued his strong play by having a outstanding season with Colorado.

The T-Birds are trying to build a stronger team as they have missed the WHL playoffs three consecutive years. They play home games at Kent’s ShoWare Center.
